Chiang Mai's Country Byways

Three wonderful days of cycling beside the Ping River, along back roads and through the hills of Northern Thailand. Visit Sri Lanna National Park, sleep on a raft house and in a tree house. Meet the local people and some of their elephants.

 Day 1: Chiang Mai - Sri Lanna Homestay - Raft House Overnight   (-/L/D)


Meet you guide at around 08.00 select the bike most suitable for you. After a briefing get ready to set of. Start biking from the city of Chiang Mai along the bank of Ping River and enjoy the passing agricultural landscape with flower gardens, orchards, rice fields, vegetable cultivation. Have lunch at a restaurant in Sri Lanna National Park. Riding on the back roads and village pathways there are hardly any cars so it is a very safe and relaxing trip. It is about 55 - 60 kilometres to Mae Ngad Dam but 95% of it on the flat. Drinking water and snacks are served along the way. On arrival at the dam, settle into your raft house accommodation with dinner and overnight on the raft.

Day 2: Chiang Dao Elephant Camp - Cave Explorer - Mae Mae Village Homestay   (B/L/D)


Wake up by the nature’s alarm, roosters and birdsong. Have breakfast and then set off by bike from Sri Lanna National Park and learn about the agriculture  that you see along the way and the local people’s way of life. Have lunch at the Elephant Camp in Chiang Dao.

In the afternoon continue cycling to Chiang Dao Cave and Hot Spring. The total cycling today will be 50 kms.  Transfer by road to Mae Mae village for your overnight in The Tree House. You will cook your own dinner with the help of a local expert (your guide will be translator) and then you will eat with members of the community. Afterwards relax and share stories with your host. (Thai massage and steam bath are available at the Tree House but are not included in the package price.)

Day 3: Mae Mae Homstay - Hill Tribe Villages - Chiang Mai   (B/L/-)


After an early breakfast take a walk around Mae Mae village. Visit the school, meet the people and see the villagers’ tea plantations. Walk to a nearby waterfall. Have lunch in the village. After lunch, cycle to visit Akha, Lahu, Lisu and Parong hill-tribe villages. After these visits, transfer back to Chiang Mai.

In some villages you may not be allowed take pictures of people and some places may be out of bounds to visitors. If you wish to take photographs or are unsure whether an action is appropriate, please ask your local guide for advice.
