Southern Thailand Explorer

An adventure down in the South of Thailand, well away from the normal tourist trails, to explore the region’s culture and great natural beauty, including the world-famous Thale Noi Water-Fowl Reserve. Take a boat trip on Thale Sap lake, stay in a fishing village and go out with the fishermen to learn about their way of life. Add cycling and white-water kayaking as well and you have a real adventure for everyone.

Day 1: Bangkok – Phatthalung   (-/-/D)


Depart Bangkok at 15.10 by overnight train to Phatthalung Province with 2nd-class air-conditioned sleeping berths.

Day 2 :  Nan Mot Daeng Water Park   (B/L/D)


Arrive Phatthalung in the early morning, have breakfast at the local market and then drive the 31 kms by traditional pickup to Nan Mot Daeng, a water adventure park. Stop on the way at Khao Pu Khao a National Park to take a nature walk. Check in and relax before lunch at the restaurant. Then enjoy an exciting 2 hours of white-water kayaking along a 6.5 km. course. Afterwards, the afternoon is free for swimming, or taking a sauna perhaps. Dinner and overnight at the water park.

Day 3:  Nan Mot Daeng – Pak Pra   (B/L/D)


After an early breakfast set off on the 50 kms-bike ride to Ban Pak Pra. Have lunch at a local restaurant along the way. Arrive at Pak Pra in the afternoon and check into Wetland Camp,  a local resort located in natural surroundings on the edge of Thale Sap lake, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Have dinner at the resort.

Day 4: Pak Pra – Phatthalung   (B/L/D)


After a very early breakfast set off for Pak Phra, a 30-minute drive and then take a long tail boat on the Pak Pra canal and head to where it empties into Thale Sap, to see the many stilted fishing platforms, known as yor yak in Thai, with the sunrise behind them. Afterwards continue by boat to explore Thale Noi Waterfowl Reserve where can be found over 180 species of resident and migratory birds that make their home among the lotus flowers, bulrushes, reeds and grasses of the lake. After the boat trip, you are back within walking distance of the piers and bird watching tower at Baan Thale Noi. Have lunch and then explore the over a dozen workshops carrying on the tradition of Krajud: crafting mats, baskets, hats and other products from a type of long and hardy local grass. In the late morning take the 40-minute drive back to Phatthalung town for lunch. Check into the Centris Hotel. Afternoon free to explore the town.

Day 5: Koh Mak   (B/L/D)


After breakfast take a train at 08.20 to Han Thao, arriving at about 09.20 and then cycle the 20 kms to Koh Mak. On the way stop at the small town of Pak Payoon to visit the local market then continue cycling on to Koh Mak and get a warm welcome there from the local people. After checking into your homestay and having lunch, explore the fishing village and join in with the activities of the local people. Learn how to make fishing nets and traps. Afterwards take a boat to visit the nearby caves that are home to the swiftlets, whose nests are much sort after to make birds-nest soup. Overnight at the homestay.

Day 6: Koh Mak – Phatthalung   (B/L/-)


Take an early morning walk to see the fish landed after the night’s fishing and learn more of the way of life of the local people; time for a little bird watching and seeing the unusual sight of water buffaloes swimming in the lake. Then back to the homestay for breakfast. Spend the morning with the villagers and then after lunch at your homestay say goodbye to your host family and drive back to Phatthalung town, which will take about 90 minutes. Make a stop on the way at Prai Wan Waterfall, the most beautiful waterfall in Phatthalung with time to relax and enjoy swimming in the cool, clear waters. Arrive Phatthalung town and drop off. End of services.
